How do I identify a bird in my backyard? Spot sparrows, finches, more

house finch eggs

House Finches typically live off things like nuts, berries, and seeds. Even in suburban areas, House Finches have a long list of predators attracted to their red feathers. However, life in the wild is dangerous, and many may not live to see their 11th birthday. Things like available food sources, cold winters, and predators cut the lifespan of the House Finch short.

Fortunately for the birds and many of us, the House Finch adapted well and is now a common bird in almost every state. Initially, the House Finch was a bird of the west, but because of its rosy breast and very melodic song, people wanted to own one. The university closed its campus Wednesday evening as LAPD began arresting demonstrators. These doves are one of the most harvested migratory game birds in North America.

House Finch Migration and How to Attract Them to Your Birdhouse

Both males and females may sing during the breeding season, and males sing year round. When finches lay eggs they leave the nest about twelve to fifteen days after hatching. Both parents participate in feeding the young but after the first few days of incubation the male takes over the feeding job. After this time the female’s role slowly diminishes as she prepares the nest for the next clutch.

Do house finches use the same nest?

Their body shape is similar to other finches, and they have short, thick bills. House Finches are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, however by natural and artificial range enlargement, they’re now ample all through North America. Throughout their range, many House Finch populations migrate both quick distances latitudinally or altitudinally. Before 1945, populations of House Finches within the Okanogan Valley migrated south, but since 1945, House Finches on this space have been resident. The feminine then joins the male in bringing meals to the younger.

House Finch Song

While House Finches flock towards feeders during the non-breeding season, most flocks will stay together and use the bird feeder’s year round. They also often forage on the ground and perch on weeds, shrubs, and trees. The House Finches diet is mostly vegetable matter (seeds, buds, berries and nectar). They also eat a few small insects, especially aphids, but are primarily seed and fruit eaters at all times of the year (Bird Web).

What Do House Finches Look Like?

This bird species starts its breeding season in March and lasts through to August. Finches in Canada or the eastern part of the United States around the Great Lakes region typically head south for the winter. The House Finches in mild weather locations in the south or western United States typically stick around for the winter months. They often construct their nests in trees but sometimes build nests on the sides of buildings, street lamps, or even abandoned nests. A pet shop owner in New York captured and sold House Finches as pets, which was very illegal.

What time of year do house finches nest?

Overall width of the nest is 3-7 inches, with the inside cup 1-3 inches across and up to 2 inches deep. Bird watchers can easily attract this bird to feeders by offering Black-oil Sunflower, safflower, and nyjer seeds. Even during the breeding season, these birds regurgitate seeds to their young. The Brown-headed Cowbird often lays its eggs in House Finches nests.

However, most finches nest between early March and August. The first clutch typically hatches in March after a fourteen-day incubation period. They spend their days hopping along the ground or though the shrubbery in search of seeds, berries, and fruits. As the breeding season begins, pairs form and break away from the flock to reproduce. Because they’re so widespread, house finches will not be troublesome to seek out. Watch for small, brown-gray birds with a splash of red on the top and rump, usually at low or mid-story ranges in bushes and bushes.

During the winter they migrate from the northeastern U.S. to southern regions. The reasons for this movement are uncertain but it’s safe to assume that they’ll follow some pattern or another. But it’s certainly worth knowing where they’re most likely to spend the winter. Some northern populations of House Finches are migratory, moving south in the winter. They are extending their range north into southern Canada and south into Mexico.

While the dad feeds the young fledglings, the female House Finch is busy building a new nest for her next brood. The male House Finch forages for food and brings it back to the female. During this time, the female House Finch also protects her nest from hungry predators. Many House Sparrows lay between two to six broods per season, with the average being around four broods per nesting season. With courtship happening in the winter, nesting season begins in early spring.

There are no exceptional threats to the house finch, and their population has increased in the last 50 years, unlike many bird species. Their primary risk is disease outbreak that began in the 1990s, which took an initial hit to their population. As with all wildlife, it’s important to be respectful of the house finch and their habitat. Keep your distance from them, maintain the park speed limit, and refrain from feeding them. House Finches may be primarily responsible for raising the young but there are instances where the male plays an important role in raising the young. House Finches may also spend more time in the nest during the day.

The nest cup is often made of leaves, feathers, fine stems, rootlets, wool, thin twigs, and string. Adult male House Finches are rosy read on their upper breast and face. They have streaks of brown on their tail, belly, and back. They also have a red rump that can only be seen in flight. If you’ve ever wanted to witness a finch bringing a new little bundle of joy into the world, you’ll need a bit of patience. On average, it takes about two weeks from the time a finch lays an egg for it to finally hatch.

Fortunately, today, an increase in the birds’ population has been observed as the birds benefit a lot in the many developments we do. Adult male House Finches have an all-red, evenly rounded head. House Finches also lack the mustache stripe and white eyebrow that female/immature Purple Finches have. House Finches tend to benefit from development created by humans.

Their beak size is an important factor in their visual dominance displays. During courtship, males touch bills with the females and then present the females with bits of food. If the female mimics the behavior of a hungry chick, he may feed her (Veit).

Sometimes, feathers, strings, hair, and other debris are also added to serve as a soft lining of the best. House Finches are very common in various parts of North America, sometimes extending to Southern Canada. Their population ranges from Oregon to California and Mexico, then towards the western portions of Nebraska and Texas. The vast majority of the House Finch's diet is vegetable matter--seeds, buds, berries, and nectar. They eat a few small insects, especially aphids, but are primarily seed- and fruit-eaters at all times of the year. Their tails seem long in comparison to their wings because their wings are on the shorter side.

In fact, the vast majority of these finches in eastern North America survive by living in close proximity to humans. Their primary habitats are backyards, suburban areas, cities, farms, and parks. In their natural range, the species inhabits more “traditional” and less urban habitats. Adult males are rosy red across the face and higher breast, with streaky brown back, stomach, and tail.

A Towering Home in the Alaskan Wilderness Looks Like Something Right out of a Dr Seuss Book

Sure, it’s a long way to the top, but once you get there, the view can’t be beat. On a clear day, Mr. Weidner can see for over 300 miles in all directions. There are several thoughts as to why the house kept “growing.” Some versions of the story claim that when the house was originally built, it had a fabulous view of Denali. However, the construction is said to have begun right after a forest fire; thus, the trees were all short with new growth. As time progresses, the view was impeded by the maturing trees.

The Adorably Whimsical ‘Deer Train’ Transports Visitors to Japan’s Famed Nara Park

Deep in the woods of Alaska, there sits a house that locals fondly refer to as the “Dr. Seuss’ House.” One glimpse and you can immediately see why the house gained that appropriate label. The house has a 185-foot-tall skinny tower that resembles layers atop of a wedding cake. The top certainly offers a unique perspective on Alaska, with 360-degree views of (on a clear day) Denali, the Homer Spit, and the start of the Aleutian chain. The owner considers it “a poem to the sky.” He just doesn’t know when it will be finished.

The Cat Mayor of Talkeetna

As Weidner is one of the top trial lawyers in Alaska, he has a hard time finding time to work on it. He says though, when he is done, he and his family will enjoy the tower. Most of all, he will sit up top and watch the Northern Lights. The stories you’ve heard are bizarre, far-fetched, and have become almost legendary over the past decade… but they are all are wrong. Mr. Weidner didn’t set out to build a fantastic, fictional place… he wasn’t even planning to create Goose Creek Tower (the structure’s TRUE name) as it stands today. In fact, not much at all was known about the house—not even the owner—until reporters from local station KTVA started looking into it.

Private Property

As one of the top trial lawyers in Alaska, Weidner had a difficult time finding time to work on it. The home is sadly abandoned now, but apparently has a new owner that is planning to renovate it. The result is a 12-story tower that looks like a bunch of mini homes teetering on top of each other, a truly amazing sight in an otherwise uninhabited area. The reason you can see all the mountains across the Inlet is because of their height. Like us on Facebook to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders. Alaska's Dr. Seuss House is a whimsical tower made of stacked cabins

Meg has worked in writing, editing, and media-related fields for over 10 years and joined the team at OnlyInYourState in 2015.

Weidner said once the building is finished, he may open up the outside for visitors to come and see. The 185-foot-tall (56-metre-tall) structure looks like several houses stacked atop each other, which it basically is. Weidner started with the original 40-by-40-foot (12-by-12-metre) log cabin and then realised he could construct pillars that would allow him to put another house on top.

Trips

Initially, this home was planned to be a 40 x 40 foot log cabin. Just how did this eclectic MIT alumni and self-described “frustrated architect” construct this private home as a series of stacked houses placed one on top of another? The higher the house reached, the smaller the floors become… and the more they looked as though they are randomly and haphazardly placed one atop of another. The previous owner spent a decade adding floors, but when he died abruptly, the tower was abandoned for 10 years.

In order to keep the view he loved, Weidner realized that he had to keep building taller and taller. The owner built the house after a forest fire, and originally it had views of Mount McKinley and Denali National Park. But when the trees recovered, he lost his view, prompting him to add more and more stories until it became the 12-story tower it is now. Weidner did originally only plan on building a two-story log cabin, then he let his mind (and engineering degree) take over.

Dr. Seuss House - Video, Photos and The Story

As time progressed, his view was impeded, and he would build another level, eventually ending with the building you see here. The 360-degree views of the surrounding wilderness can be observed for up to 300 miles. Weidner had hoped that when the house construction was finished, the family would be able to enjoy the tower.

But he built right after a forest fire, so all of the trees were small. As the trees grew taller, he would add another level to see the mountain. As the story goes, the owner originally built the home to get a good view of Denali(Mt. McKinley), American’s tallest mountain. The story behind it is that the owner originally built the house with a view of Denali/Mt. He happened to build it right after a forest fire though, so the trees were all short, new growth.

Next time you are traveling deep in the Alaskan wilderness, keep an eye out for the house that looks like something straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. Willow, Alaska's Goose Creek Tower - also known as the Dr. Seuss house, for obvious reasons - was built by a creative individual who wanted to have the best view possible of Denali. In fact, the owner wanted to be able to see the mountain so bad, that as the trees around the house got taller, so did the house. Now, the bizarre residence is considered to be one of the great architectural feats of America. Willow, Alaska’s Goose Creek Tower – also known as the Dr. Seuss house, for obvious reasons – was built by a creative individual who wanted to have the best view possible of Denali.

The house remains an oddity that visitors to the small town can view from the road, but it is no longer open for explorers. In an odd turn of architectural fate, the Geisel Library at San Diego State University by William Pereirais named for Dr. Seuss. It is one of the classic 1960s American campus Brutalist treasures, with Seussian, gravity-defying concrete levels that expand outward toward the sky. The closest that architects have come to actually making the architecture Dr. Seuss might be husband and wife artist duo Arakawa and Gins. Dr. Seuss was inspired by architecture, and it is rumored that his famous Whoville is based on the Massachusetts town of Easthampton and nearby Mt. Tom. However, he also inspired many amateur designers, including many treehouse designs, from the simple to the fantastic.

The home’s original creator, builder, and owner, Phillip Weidner, originally planned on building a two-story log cabin. However, quickly the knowledge he gained from his engineering degree got ahead of him. One floor was added, and then another and another… more and more ladders and staircases were constructed and now, depending on how you choose to arrive at the top, there are somewhere between 14 and 17 floors. The project started as a two-story cabin, but once he got started, Mr. Weidner let his mind (and engineering degree) take over.

The major building is finished, but it’ll take a while before the interior is done and the building is habitable. Weidner said he’d like to make the first few floors rooms for his family to stay in. The house is not complete and is on private property that is monitored. But if you take a ride on the Alaskan railroad through Talkeetna you’ll get an amazing view. You can also see it briefly from the highway but it is gone in a second, so be on the lookout.

Dr Seuss Log Cabin Tower House in Alaska Is Massive

Renovations were then taken over a by a new occupant to add more stories, and the sky-piercing structure now comprises 12 floors that gradually taper in square footage. You can’t visit the house in person, but if you want to see it, you can get a good view on Alaska’s train north. You could also get the best views hiring a bush pilot and flying overhead. The house is located in the Mat-Su Valley between Willow and Talkeetna. The top of the tower offers 360-degree views and Weidner — who works as one of Alaska’s top trial attorneys — says it’s possible to see for a minimum of 300 miles. You can't visit the house in person, but if you want to see it, you can get a good view on Alaska's train north.

Dr. Seuss Would Have Loved This Alaskan Cabin

The only reason Weidner stopped when he did is because federal airspace starts at 200 feet, and he didn’t want the home (which he calls the Goose Creek Tower) to violate any laws. The Giesel Library by William Pereira at San Diego State University, almost as much a spectacle as the so-called “Dr. Seuss house,” is named after the legendary storyteller and illustrator himself. The brutalist structure features gravity-defying concrete levels extending from a tapered base.

What Is the ‘Into the Wild’ Bus and Why Has It Been Removed From the Alaskan Wilderness?

Deep in the woods of Alaska, there sits a house that locals fondly refer to as the “Dr. Seuss’ House.” One glimpse and you can immediately see why the house gained that appropriate label. Alaska’s Dr. Seuss House is a whimsical tower made of stacked cabins

Depending on how you look at it, and which ladders and staircases you climb to get to the top, there are somewhere between 14 and 17 floors. Near the small town of Telkeetna, Alaska, there is a house unlike any other. In Willow, Alaska, a now-abandoned 12-story house sits mysteriously in the middle of the wilderness outside of Anchorage.

Hidden in the sparse woods outside Talkeetna, Alaska, is a bizarrely singular home known by locals as the Dr. Seuss House, though that isn’t what its creator calls it. While this whimsical house has no direct relation to the famed author, it is easy to see how the structure got its nickname. Turns out it was built by Phil Weidner, an Anchorage attorney. He also wants to put in a ham radio station, and broadcast what he calls Radio Free Goose Creek. It was abandoned for a while but now has a new owner who is working on renovations and, hopefully, some reinforcements too.

Weidner also planned to sit on top and watch the Northern Lights. If you plan on visiting, keep in mind that although the house is virtually abandoned it’s still privately owned and thus on private property. A great way to see it is by driving past it, on a train, or take a ride with an Alaskan bush pilot, which in general is a great way to see the Alaskan countryside. Situated in the small town of Talkeetna, Alaska, the fantastical house is what most of us would describe as something we’ve seen in a Dr. Seuss book. Unlike anything Dr. Seuss wrote about, however, this “house is real, it’s not a fantasy” says Phillip Weidner, creator, builder, and owner of the towering home, which stands 185 feet high. The building is privately owned and the owner isn’t offering tours (it’s still a construction zone, so it’s not safe to enter), but it’s possible to see the house on the train heading north.

The towering wooden structure resembles a stack of houses, each smaller than the next as it climbs toward the sky. The quirky tower is as weird and wonderful as Dr. Seuss’ unbuilt works, and the townspeople have named it Dr. Seuss House. It is on private property, but you see it by driving by or taking a helicopter tour. As the story goes, the owner originally built the home to get a good view of Denali (Mt. McKinley), American's tallest mountain.

Abandoned Dr Seuss house in Alaska a tower of mystery.

Photographer Jovell Rennie recently took some shots of the wondrous house, which looks like an appropriate spot for a Lorax to live. It sat abandoned for almost the same amount of time until a new owner came along and started to work on it. Weidner has been working on the project off and on since the late ‘90s (he’s a lawyer in Anchorage, which keeps him busy).

You'd think the story behind this one-of-a-kind home would be a tall tale (har har), but it's actually not a figment of anyone's imagination. According to Colossal, the first owner of this Seussian cabin in Willow, Alaska, wanted to build a home with a view of Mount McKinley and Denali National Park. But as the surrounding area recovered from a forest fire, the trees grew tall, and the only way to preserve the view was to go up. Weidner kept adding levels to what’s been nicknamed the Dr. Seuss House until he reached 185 feet.

Meg Archer is an Editor & Newsletter Editor who has called Oregon home for nearly 30 years. She spent her childhood exploring the mountains, forests, and high desert of Central Oregon before relocating to Portland after a brief stint out-of-state for college. Meg has worked in writing, editing, and media-related fields for over 10 years and joined the team at OnlyInYourState in 2015.

As the story goes, the original owner of this unwieldy building located in Willow, Alaska built his house shortly after a forest fire with a clear view of Mount McKinley and Denali National Park. As the surrounding trees recovered, the pristine view was obscured and the owner decided to add few more stories, eventually spending a decade adding floors until it reached the 12-ish story tower you see today. Seuss House” as the design so closely mimics structures you might see in Theodor Geisel’s illustrated storybooks.

The 9 classes of Norwegian Cruise Line ships, explained The Points Guy

norwegian lines cruise ships

Norwegian Sun is for the first time sailing in Asia beginning January 28, 2022, offering a 5-day Japan itinerary from Hong Kong, prior to sailing a series of 11-day voyages from Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Hong Kong, and Singapore. Through NCL's "Free at Sea" program on both vessels, passengers continue to enjoy an unlimited open bar, complimentary specialty dining, free WiFi, excursion credits, and family members sail for free, reduced or free airfare. In 2015, on NCL Sun and NCL Sky ships was introduced fare-inclusive open bars for all passengers 21 years and older.

Breakaway Class

However, this program was terminated in 2019 (effective for itineraries on or after September 7, 2019). On October 17, 2012, NCLH and Meyer Werft reached an agreement for the construction of two new Breakaway-Plus class vessels with scheduled delivery in 2015 and 2017. In September 2013, the two new boats were named Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, through an online campaign. The "Breakaway-Plus" project's contract value was estimated to be EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.92 billion). Two more ships were ordered on July 14, 2014, to enter service in 2018 and 2019. In October 2023 NCL announced that starting January 2024, the company has ~1000 solo staterooms fleetwide (across 19 ships).

NCL stateroom upgrades

However, there's a downside for everyone else on board the ships that have them, which is that they take away from the deck-top lounge space available to everybody else. As is the case with the Galaxy Pavilion attractions mentioned above, the go-kart and laser tag experiences on Norwegian ships don't come cheap. Norwegian ships also all have Mandara Spas, which can be quite big on the bigger vessels, and there are fitness centers on every ship. If you know you want to eat at several extra-charge restaurants during a single voyage, you can buy one of several dining packages that offer meals at a discount. Pride of America notably operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports. Norwegian is the world's fourth-largest cruise line by passenger capacity, with 19 ships that together offer 56,780 berths.

NCL's all-inclusive cruise package

The refined design of The Commodore Room, the wide variety of to-the-minute items at the indoor/outdoor Surfside Café, and the global offerings of Indulge Food Hall will satisfy every craving. Finished with the finest touches, spacious suites with luxury accommodations. Leisure days at sea, exciting moonlit nights, and nothing to distract from the journey ahead. Built by Lloyd Werft in Germany, Norwegian Sun was the last Sun-class ship. She was launched in 2001 in a dual christening ceremony with sister ship Norwegian Star. Originally built by Meyer Werft in Germany as Pride of Hawaii, Norwegian Jade received a rebranding in 2008 when Pride of Hawaii was removed from the Hawaiian market and redeployed.

Other Norwegian cruise ships, such as Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Sun, have specific features that might make them better options for solo travelers or retirees. Certain Norwegian ships are best for budget travelers, while others are best for luxury travelers. Unlike many cruise vessels, Norwegian ships do not have self-serve launderettes on cabin decks for passenger use.

While en route, guests can spread out in its bountiful outdoor spaces, take a ride down the Aqua Slidecoaster, splash in the kids and adults-only pools, and even book out the line's first-ever three-bedroom duplex Haven Suites. And now, it's unveiling all its food offerings onboard too, which include plenty of best-in-class offerings. Like the former vessels, the Dawn-class ships have around a dozen food-serving venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a Brazilian churrascaria (barbecue) restaurant, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery. What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions such as go-kart tracks, laser tag courses and large water-park areas that Norwegian has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Jewel class probably isn't for you. The top decks of the Breakaway-class ships have two pool areas and water parks with waterslides, for instance — just like the Breakaway Plus-class ships.

Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva: Best for luxury lovers

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said President and CEO Harry Sommer. "Expanding on our award-winning food and beverage program, we're looking forward to bringing new concepts to life aboard Norwegian Aqua, while continuing to deliver on the variety of available offerings and value that NCL delivers." It comes with a hybrid roller coaster water slide, a glow-in-the-dark basketball court, enough space for more than 3,500, and some of the most innovative dining at sea. The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. Deck-top attractions include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track.

They appeal to a subset of Norwegian fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They have the biggest spas and casinos among vessels in the Norwegian fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in suite and cabin types. In many cases, Norwegian Cruise Line's oldest cruise ships — built in the 1990s and early 2000s — are just half the size of the line's newest vessels and have fewer venues on board. Still, even these smaller ships offer many attractions compared to some vessels at competing lines. Around 17% smaller than Norwegian's biggest vessels, Prima and Viva are the first tow of six sister ships that the line will roll out between now and 2027 that will significantly change the composition of its fleet.

The first two ships in the series, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, measure 143,535 gross tons a piece, which is about 15% smaller than Norwegian Encore, Norwegian's biggest ship. At 75,904 gross tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian Encore, the line's biggest ship. It carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than Norwegian Encore.

The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are best for vacationers who like a less crowded, more intimate resort experience. Are you looking for the most megaresort-like, activity-packed Norwegian Cruise Line ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

That's about 40% fewer passengers than you'll find on the biggest Norwegian ships. Perhaps most notably, balcony cabins on the ship have an unusual design that includes curved walls, rounded bed corners, and a sink and vanity area that is in the main living space (for all to see), separate from a closed-off toilet area. The toilet area is behind a translucent door that some cruisers find less private than they had hoped. All four of the Breakaway Plus ships have large, private, two-deck-high suite enclaves called The Haven that come with their own pool areas, restaurants and lounges.

Fourteen ships are divided among five different classes, including the Sun, Dawn, Jewel, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Class. Norwegian Epic, Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit are in their own classes, adding to the brand’s variety of vessels. Dating to 1998, Norwegian Spirit is Norwegian's smallest and oldest ship, and — like the line's Sun-class ships — it generally appeals to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than you'll find on the big Norwegian ships. Each of the Jewel-class ships holds around 2,400 passengers at double occupancy (plus a few hundred more with every berth filled).
